steampunkstarwars200

Yes, I do realize these were out in 2007, but I didn’t know about them and I figure why not post these on iGT. There must be others like myself who doesn’t know about these amazing ‘Star Wars’ steampunk art by Eric Poulton. Poulton may have been the first to put the steampunk spin on our favorite characters from Star Wars. Unlike Bjorn Hurri’s designs which was more animated, these have a much different feel and texture to it. Featured in black and white, Poulton’s steampunk Star Wars collection seems more like something you might see in a dream and much more Victorian-like (I hope that makes sense). One of my favorites from this collection has to be “Captain Ackbar” and “Massive Solar-Orbiting Electro-Mechanical Analytic Engine, Mark 6″. There is something about these illustrations that I find very whimsical and vibrant even though it lacks color. I think the black and white theme works in it’s advantage. Even though its over 5 years late, it still amazing to look at!

steampunkwitchking

This is so maddening, I don’t know where to start. French DeviantArt-ist, Max Arkes (aka maxarkes) decide to put this studly picture together for a steampunk art challenge on a forum. His entry is this bad ass ‘Lord of the Rings’ Steampunk Witch King of Angmar (the leader of the Nazgûl aka Ringwraiths) illustration. A Steampunk Witch King is definitely more menacing with those intense glowing goggles and steam shooting out everywhere from his body. Must better than some dusty old cloak. I wonder if the Steampunk Witch King would fly on a “Nazgûl-bird” (those unnamed flying dragon-thingies) or a steampunk style glider of death. A glider would be incredible.

steampunkstarwars

mmmmm.. I love me some ‘Star Wars’ fan art. Its even better than Star Wars is mashed up with something as beautiful and elegant as “steampunk”. This amazing collection of steampunk Star Wars character illustration was created by UK based conceptual artist/illustrator, Bjorn Hurri. Unlike many artists who just adds some bells and whistles to an existing design, Bjorn really took it to another level by designing the character from scratch. The ability to reimagine these iconic characters and turn them on their heads yet have them still recognizable to the viewer is quite remarkable. Considering almost nothing about Bjorn’s steampunk Boba Fett is similar to that of Boba Fett from the movies, I still would be able recognize the infamous bounty hunter. My favorite of the collection has to be steampunk Princess Leia and Chewbacca. The only one that seems to look similar to the movie version is the Jawa Scavenger. On the other hand, Jawas are pretty steampunk’ed themselves.

steampunkchopper

This is something I can look at all day. Designed by Russian graphic designer, Mikhail Smolyanov of Solifague Design, this steampunk style chopper named “The Black Widow” will most likely not see the streets anytime soon, but Mikhail’s design is so amazing and realistic that many custom motorcycle sites has featured this chopper thinking it was real.  This beautifully designed low-riding chopper has all the bells and whistles that scream steampunk. What I really love is the bent back forks leading back to the handles and the single swing arm in the back. Considering that “steampunk” has become very popular in the world of illustration and cosplay, it is pretty awesome to see someone take that concept and run (or ride) with it. This stretched out chopper would look mean if you say it roaring down the street. Too bad its only a concept and will (most likely) be never made.

201004steampunktrooper

This is most likely old news, but I’ve been out due to surgery so I’m just catchin’ up on all the Star Wars goodies. Unlike most Star Wars fanatics like myself, instead of just owning a replica Stormtrooper helment, Brian Rood designed/customized a Stormtrooper helmet with a steampunk twist. Everything from cogs to random rivets and bolts are exposed in this insane custom. This isn’t Brian’s first attempt at steampunkin’ Star Wars helmets. His steampunktrooper helmets has created quite the buzz in the Star Wars community and even though many have offered to purchase Brian’s creations, they aren’t for sale. However, don’t think your dream of getting your own helmet is impossible. Brian is planning to create and sell his wicked creations in the near future. The steam punk stormtrooper helmet above was created specifically for TK Project, which is a charity event held by the 501st Legion for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Stormtroopers are such a generous bunch of fellas!

Welcome to “The Mechanical Kingdom”! When Disney Design Group artist, Mike Sullivan got introduced to the culture of “steampunk” at a sci-fi convention, he couldn’t help himself but get obsessed with the designs and unique features of steampunk. He has taken his new found love to his work as Disney will be designing and producing merchandise combining the world of steampunk and Disney’s colorful cast of characters and all the merchandise in a collection titled, “The Mechanical Kingdom” will be designed by Mike Sullivan himself.

“I created a story outline and several sketches to sell the idea of creating Steampunk-inspired merchandise,” continued Mike. “Honestly, it was a long process explaining the concept as many folks were unfamiliar with Steampunk. Thankfully, the Disney Pin Team loved the idea and created a pin set.” (I promise I had nothing to do with it).

The first releases from “The Mechanical Kingdom” line will be five limited edition pins (which will be sold individually) and also a themed journal written by Professor Ludwig Von Drake that will features an introduction into the Mechanical Kingdom story. On top of that, the journal will include two additional limited edition “completer” pins of a steampunked Mickey Mouse and Pirate Pete and almost the five individual pins.

There more stuff in the works as Mike is designing Mechanical Kingdom Vinylmation figurines (Disney’s version of urban designer figures) as well. The pins and journal will be rolling out in April 2010 and sold exclusively at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Parks Resorts. I’ll be there.
