robonativity

This is so damn random, it’s giving me a headache… but a good kind. Cardboard crafter extraordinaire, TK615 put together a very odd nativity scene for Christmas. Instead of getting some crummy plastic statues from WalMart, TK615 (I really wish I knew your real name buddy…) took a pile of cardboard, some hot glue and put together this pretty rad Robot themed nativity scene.

I made this using nothing but cardboard, hot glue, and OCD.  2 days no sleep…. (cut, glue, burn,… repeat)….  there is no templates, it’s all free hand…. lot of circles,  trial and error…. measure twice cut once…..

I used to work with a lot of cardboard during my set build/painting days and that shit is no joke. For him (or her) to complete this whole 3D robot scene in just two days is mind-boggling. The scene includes Clank (Ratchet and Clank), Crow T. Robot (Mystery Science Theater 3000), and Bender (Futurama… but I didn’t have to tell you that right?) as the three magi, Johnny Number Five from ‘Short Circuit’ as Joseph, Rosie from the ‘Jetsons’ as the Virgin Mary, and representing the shepherd and his flock, WALL-E and an Imperial AT-AT from ‘Star Wars’. The robot representing “Baby Jesus”… I have no fuckin’ clue. Too bad it wasn’t R2-D2. I love how Johnny Five is staring down at the baby while Rosie is too busy being worried whether J5 will notice that he wasn’t the one that install the baby in her. Ratchet must know whats up cause he pointing and laughing at the fool.

Sometimes discovering something so awesome, but finding out its too late is one of the worst feelings in the world. Yesterday, art/illustration inspired apparel company, Shirt.Woot featured a bitchin’ t-shirt that mashed up three things I love. Those three things are zombies, vampires, and robots (who doesn’t love zombies, vampires, and robots). Unfortunately, the shirt was sold out before I came across the design and this lead into weeping. Due to the fact that I was floored by the illustration, I did some digging to find out who designed this lovely piece. This incredible illustration, named “Zombie Vampire Robots from Space!” was beautifully created by Benjamin Douglass. Benjamin is a full time professional designer and illustrator and he does projects for various companies for advertisement and marketing campaigns, however his personal illustrations are the most creative and humourous. I always feared about a robot invasion or a zombie apocalypse enslaving the human race, but thanks to Mr. Douglass, now I fear zombie vampire robots from space. Hopefully, this won’t be the first and only design from Ben featuring zombies, vampires, and robots.

You can check out Benjamin’s work on his website at benjamindouglass.com and follow him on Twitter at @bennyd302

Tomotaka Takahashi of ROBO-GARAGE is currently the world record holder for his amazing feat at the famous Le Mans race track. Takashashi was able to get his mechanical invention, a cute little robot named EVOLTA, to run for 24 hours on the race track. The objective of that feat was to create a robot that has the greatest endurance. Now, Takahashi wants to tackle the feat of the highest jump by a machine. Introducing ROPID (a mash up of robot and rapid). This 15 inch robot has the ability to jump 3 inches into the air. Very cool ability for a real robot, but pretty lame compared to a fictional robot that have machine guns and stuff… Back to the story. Just like the words that made up his name, ROPID is able to run and turn in rapid motion. Another cool feature about ROPID is that he (or she) is enabled with a Raytron’s BSRM01-01E voice recognition chip that allows the user to use voice commands to control ROPID. ROPID is currently able to recognize 8 words, but based on the video, Takahashi still needs to fix some of the kinks. Regardless, Takahasi is making great strides to the day where robots will enslave humankind. Cheers! (I think all robots will enslave humans sooner or later)

Is this it for man-kind? Will robots rule the Earth and drive humans into extinction? Only if they can sing us to death. “Titan the Robot” was unleashed at during GITEX Technology Week held at Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. During the GITEX Tech Week, convention goers get to check out the latest and greatest gadgets and gizmos from electronic companies such as Cisco, Hitachi, Panasonic, Sanyo, Seagate and Verbatim. Titan was the creation of Nik Fielding and is sponsored by Panasonic. Consider how evil and menacing this robot is, Titan can sing, dance, and hit on the ladies. The kicker is, Titan is not really a real robot. Titan is actually an suit with animatronics. Theres actually some dude inside Titan. Unfortunately, many people though this was the real deal, only to find out that it was some cheap parlor tricks. Even with the deception, Titan is pretty cool to look at. Kind of looks like the bastard child of of Iron Man and ABC Warrior (from Judge Dredd) after they had one too many shots to tequila. Hit the jump to see this sucker in action. Fabulous!

Can you consider robots cute and adorable? If you expecting anything close to WALL-E and EVE, you are sadly mistaken.
Developed by the National Taiwan University of Science and Techonology, two robots named “Thomas” and “Janet” are featured rehearsing for the theatrical play, The Phantom of the Opera. Stomach turning awkwardness ensues. The freakish faces on these robots (especially Janet) makes it looks like Leatherface meets Johnny-Five.
I am all for development of science and technology to better mankind, but 2 lip locking robots doesn’t seem to do anything, but make me want to toss up the tacos I ate for lunch. I’m going to file this under fail and try to erase the image from my fragile mind. /yack

20090806surrogates01I driving to work to work this morning, when I was racing through Los Angeles traffic, a billboard caught my eye. At first I figured it was a new billboard advertising a gentlemen’s club in LA (those are rampant around the city), until I took a second look to see something odd.

What I failed to realize during my first glance was that it was a billboard promoting Bruce Willis’ newest sci-fi action thriller, ‘Surrogates’. I have seen the trailer months ago, so I have been on board for a while now, but billboard was quite interesting to look at.

Of course, when I saw it while driving, I only saw a glimpse of it, but thanks to IGN, I was able to take a closer look.

My first reaction when I saw the billboard was something is the area of, “She’s so hot…”, yet after getting a closer look, my reaction turned into, “Ewww…”. I was quite shocked from my second reaction considering the fact that just moments before, I was “oogling” at the female in the billboard.

Maybe its the exposed spinal cord. I’m not sure. My final conclusion? It’s scary as hell.

What’s is your reaction? Also, does this ad look familiar?

[Official trailer + more robo goodness]
