It makes a lot of sense. ‘Star Wars’ is popular and so is “papercraft”. So it makes perfect sense to have Star Wars themed papercraft sculptures. It’s really easy to go to the toy store and just fork over a few bucks to get a model Imperial AT-AT or TIE Fighter, but it takes real skill to make one out of paper. I do realize that making something from scratch seems like a daunting task for many (including myself) and most people would not even try. Well, thanks to SF Papercraft, they provide you an easy way to creating some amazing papercraft sculptures. SFP has templates and instructions that you can print so that you can build cool papercraft Star Wars vehicles such as the Millennium Falcon and a Jawa Sand Crawler. As long as you have a decent color printer and a steady hand, you should be able to put one of these together like a pro.

Hit the jump and check out some awesome Star Wars papercraft sculptures by SF Papercraft!

Japanese fans are pretty crazy. I don’t really feature much anime or manga related news on this site, but after seeing this awesomesauce of a sculpture, I couldn’t resist. Standing at two meters tall, this massive sculpture of what I believe to be the Strike Freedom Gundam from ‘Gundam SEED: Destiny’ is made entirely out of cardboard! Freakin’ cardboard I say! From the looks of it, the artist (unknown at the moment) meticulously cut and glued each panel of the Gundam one piece at a time. It’s pretty amazing considering that it looks to be free-standing with some wire support. There’s not much detail regarding who, how, and when it was made, but from what I find out the sucker only cost less than $25 to make. I guess a few bucks, a ton of know-how, and a box of band-aids goes a long way. Also, based on what I see in the picture, there seems to be some articulation in it as well (see pix). Too bad all we (in the United States) can do with cardboard is put a stupid “Free Hugs” sign together or with a little more effort, make the “box from Metal Gear Solid”. Sigh…

I do have one question. Is the Gundam’s fingers made of toilet paper rolls? If it was, someone really got busy if you know what I mean.

In 2000, artist/sculptor Cheong-ah Hwang (AKA papernoodle) started working exclusively with paper as her medium of choice when building very exquisite structures. Since then, her paper structures have been featured everywhere from art gallery, museums, and even at L’Atelier restaurant at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. Born in Seoul, Korea and now residing in Colombus, Ohio, papernoodle is now offering her brilliant paper structures on Etsy! One of the coolest items she is offering is a paper structure piece featuring the Mark III suit from the first Iron Man movie and also a Captain America based on John Romita Sr.’s interpretation of Jack Kirby’s original drawings. Referred as a bas-relief paper structure, papernoodle hand crafts each piece of paper to create a very surreal three dimensional image. Her Iron Man paper structure stands at almost one foot, yet it’s less than an inch thick. If you are interested in one of this bad ass paper structures, you can drop by papernoodle’s Etsy shop, but these won’t come cheap. Iron Man and Captain America is $250.00 each! If you do get one, just make sure you don’t spill any water on it. You’re just going to end up with a $250 flat Iron Man napkin that’s wet…

Papercrafter Haywan may be the greatest papercraft artist of all time as he designed and constructed a life-size papercraft figure of Link from Zelda. Link was made of 831 different pieces that was printed on 197 sheets of paper.

Haywan was also kind enough to supply the plans for you to download if you wished to make one yourself. Along with the regular link, Haywan also provides plans to construct other variations of Link such as the Dark Link and Fierce Diety Link. Along, with the plans, Haywan also has videos of how he built it (it is a bit confusing, but brilliants none the less.

I can only wonder whether Haywan has plans to designing a papercraft Zelda to go along with Link. If I were ever able to successfully build one for myself (which is highly doubtful), I would strap the sucker onto the hood of my car and drive it around town. Of course, I would have to figure out how to protect it from rain and bird crap. Hit the jump for close up pictures of Haywan’s creation!
