During the Jameson x Empire Magazine “Done in 60 Seconds” gave the task to it’s reader to create a sixty second video parody of their favorite movies. Some of the entries ranged from ‘The Inglorious Basterds’, ‘The Dark Knights’, ‘127 Hours’, and ‘The Lion King’. The video that really stood out from the group had to be Philip Askin’s (AKA Pippinopalon) entry of a sixty second retelling of Edgar Wright’s ‘Shaun of the Dead’ in the animation and art style “à la Brian Lee O’Malley” who was the artist behind ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. The World’ that Edgar Wright also directed.

My entry into the Empire/Jameson Done in 60 Seconds Competition 2011!
This is basically my love letter to all things Edgar Wright/Scott Pilgrim! I saw and read Scott Pilgrim in the summer of last year, and it had such a massive impact I decided to make this to vent my creative juices!
Interesting fact – I did a cracking caricature of Bill Nighy but I had to leave it out in the end. Shame.
I did the voices for Shaun and Ed and my mum kindly lent her vocal chords for Liz and Daisy… I Mean Yvonne!

One of the biggest reason I love this video from the rest of the entries has to be the fact that Philip was able to take something as different as Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim and put them together so beautifully. The story moves like it does in Pilgrim, yet still has the wit of Shaun of the Dead. Even though it was only one minute long, Philip was able to get create a pretty awesome animated rendition of Shaun of the Dead in “just sixty seconds”. Even though Philip’s video didn’t place, it is still a winner in our hearts.

Remember those annoying Microsoft commercials on the television that had random people saying that “Window 7 was my idea”? I do love Window 7 (but everything is better than Window Vista), but those commercials rubbed me the wrong way. I don’t know why, but it just did. Well, thanks to “sneakyzebra”, we get to see a parody of those commercials that asks the important question of “who’s idea was the Death Star”? Well, so far, Stormtrooper TK-421, Darth Vader, and Chewbacca are all taking credit. I’m not sure why Chewie would be included in that mix, but whatever. It’s just really funny to see a Wookiee speak.

Celebrated as one of the most iconic cars in film, the “MFP V8 Interceptor” (based off the Ford Falcon XB GT351 Interceptor) from George Miller’s ‘Mad Max’ and ‘Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior’ is one of the coolest cars we ever saw. The sound of the Interceptor was ferocious as it raced down the road in the movies. I still have fond memories of the Interceptor when I first laid my eyes on it and I do admit I cried when the Interceptor was destroyed. Well, now over 30 years later, Ford and Top Gear Australia magazine will spearhead a project to revive the Interceptor for modern times. Seems like good timing considering George Miller is hoping to start production on ‘Mad Max: Road Fury’ in the beginning of 2012 with Tom Hardy as Mad Max (rumored) alongside Charlize Theron. Todd Willing, the chief design head of Ford Australia will be leading the team into developing the new Interceptor and they have a great start already. Two concept designs by Simon Brook and Nima Nourian will serve as the foundation of the new concept car and Top Gear Australia will let it’s readers vote on which design they like the most. The winner, will move on to the “full fledged model progression” stage of the build. I’m putting my credits on Simon Brook.

Let’s face it. The sequels to ‘The Matrix’ was pretty damn terrible. I do admit, the first film was groundbreaking and a cinematic treat, but “Reloaded” and “Revolution” could not live up to the standards set by the first, and the trilogy went to hell. Well, that feat has not scared off directors Raphael Hernandez and Savitri Joly-Gonfard from taking on the challenge of creating their own spin-off fan movie based on The Matrix titled, ‘Kaydara’.

Kaydara, a bounty hunter who is living separately from the Human Resistance Group, does not believe in the prophecy of ‘the One.’ He sees this so-called saviour instead as a threat to the awakening of Man’s self-awareness and considers him an enemy. If their paths cross, Kaydara will not hesitate to confront him.

Kaydara will be a 55 minute long movie and is expected to be released sometime in May. Personally, I love the concept, but I have been lead down the wrong road when it comes to the Matrix and have faced many disappointments. Hopefully, Kaydara is something special.

autobotsthriller

So there is very little that I can really say about this video other that it FREAKIN’ INSANE! What we got here is the original generation one ‘Transformers’ animated to dance and sing to Michael Jackson’s hit song, ‘Thriller’. Simple enough right? Right….? I do have to admit that the animation is pretty solid and smooth, while the CG models are the best you will ever see, it is good enough. I would take these Transformers over any of Michael Bay’s CGI atrocities any day of the week. Whats I noticed when I watched the video for the tenth time is that apparently, Hot Rodimus is the best dancer and singer in the Autobots and when Decepitcon Seekers dance, they become something that is a cross between Energon cubes and a neon light from a strip club. Also, we learn that Shockwave is not much of a dancer or doesn’t give a shit about Thriller cause he just won’t join the fun. What a purple douche… Special thanks to my friend Jerry for showing me this little gem.

I have always been intrigued by “Día de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead) and sugar skulls ever since I was little and always that they were some of the most elegant and stunning styles of art in world. I guess that might be the reason that my jaw dropped to the floor when I ran into John Karpinsky’s (AKA Captain Magnificent) beautiful merger of sugar skulls and ‘Star Wars’.

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday celebrating the dead. Sugar skulls are often created in the image of the dead, inviting them to enjoy a celebration and feast.
Star Wars was a large part of my childhood, which sadly passed long ago. This is my tribute to characters of my youth, an invitation to the celebration of that cultural phenomenon that shaped my life so long ago.

John’s gorgeous line art and use of vibrant colors makes these illustrations so mesmerizing. I don’t know why, but I have a sudden urge to get the “Muertos Tormenta” (Dead Stormtrooper) tattooed onto my arm. Maybe after a couple shots of tequila. If you love these illustrations as much as I do, John has these available as prints via Etsy. John is currently working on a new collection of Star Wars art that he will release on May 4th (”May the 4th Be with You” Holiday).

Howling Wolves, Sexy Elf Ladies, and Half-nekked dudes that like to grunt!

Couple days ago, we did a feature on a teaser trailer for a fan-made film based on the creation of Wendy and Richard Pini, ‘ElfQuest’. As much as I was raving about the teaser, I would have to say that I was even more pleasantly surprised after checking out the full trailer for ‘ElfQuest: A Fan Imagining’ which premiered last night. Directed and produced by Paula Rhodes (@paula_rhodes) and Stephanie Thorpe (@TheStephThorpe), the four and half minute trailer features everything we saw in the teaser and more. What I really love is that fact that the visual are stunning due to the amazing costumes and make-up work. The real surprise has to be the amazing cinematography displayed in the trailer. Obviously a lot of thought was put into these amazing shots and you can really see that the “behind-the-scenes” team put a lot of attention into the details. To be honest, it has been a long time since I last read Elfquest so I’m very rusty on the characters and the story, but thanks to ElfQuest: A Fan Imagining, I have a new found interest in the series and can’t wait to read it again. At least this way, I can follow whats going on. At the moment, I really can’t get over how stunning all the ladies in the film are. Unfortunately, that lead to my wife thinking I was watching porn when she saw me checking out the trailer. On the other hand, I found myself wanting to slap myself silly once the trio of half-naked dudes in loincloths popped onto the screen. /bleh
