Our historical tour of Zombie History concludes with some great games and literature. Feel free to dive right in and test your survival skills or verse yourself in how to survive should the inevitable come.
Dead Rising (2006)
Dead Rising seemed to be created as some kind of zombie torture device. Scare your loved ones with your sadistic laughter as you smash various objects over heads of the undead, or tackle them to the ground and rip their heads off. All of it is sweet poetry that says “you can do whatever you want to do to a zombie and never feel bad about it.” The kill counter on the bottom only serves as further proof of what this game was intended to do. Go forth and hack your way to salvation!
Left 4 Dead (2008)
Probably one of the most anticipated games Valve has put out since Half Life 2. Left 4 Dead brought 28 Days Later in game form the way Resident Evil never could. The sweaty palms, the insensible screaming of your buddy over head set as the horde comes bursting through a door. The AI director is notoriously ruthless, picking off players unfortunate enough to have taken damage, forcing players into corners and throwing wave after wave of infected at them. At times, the blood is caked on so thick you can hardly see. The first time a Boomer vomits on you, you’ll know what I’m talking about.
Max Brooks
As if being the son of Mel Brooks was not enough, Max brings a no bullshit attitude and a tinge of scientific reasoning to the world of the undead. When you read World War Z you are presented with a well thought out vision of how and why the World went to War with the Zeds. His advice on how to survive from The Zombie Survival Guide is thoughtful and practical. The man knows the genre inside and out. It will be exciting to see what Hollywood does with World War Z as a film.
The Walking Dead (2003-present)
I personally believe the art of this series has suffered a serious, if not fatal blow. However, The Walking Dead still stands out as one of the finest representations of life amongst the horde. A world where everyday brings a new set of problems, people vanish unexpectedly, and one begins to wonder if he or she is lucky to be alive or not. Let us hope that AMC will do the show justice when Frank Darabont takes the reigns and attempts to bring this coveted secret world wide.
Zombies Vs. Robots (Vs. Amazons) (2006)
Ashley Wood, God of concept art for the Metal Gear Solid series, created a beautiful work with Chris Ryall handling the word play. This book doesn’t have much of a story, but if you enjoy disembolwings, twists on the genre and hot Amazon Babes, it’s recommended that you pick up a copy of the complete ZVR through Amazon.
Now a days, Zombies are very trendy topics. For those of us old enough to remember the first time George Romero showed us his horrifying vision of our future, we could not grasp that he had created a world wide sensation. Now we have zombie walks, #zombietalk and even Zombie Spock.
Let us hope this trend shuffles onward and devours the lives of many as it has devoured mine. Do you have plans for when the Zombies come? Got a favorite weapon of Choice? Looking for some collaborative techniques to take down the undead? iGeekTrooper wants to provide you with the space to share your love of zombies, so let’s talk zombies shall we?
